Clickin Moms 4 on 4 Blog Circle | Photography Challenge Edition

Every month myself and a very talented group of ladies from Clickin Moms get together to create the "4 on 4 Blog Circle" showcasing 4 of our favorite images from the month.  Be sure to click the link at the bottom of this post to explore the circle!

So back in December of 2014 I sat down on Skype with one of my best friends (who IS my best photographer friend) and together we came up with the idea of having a fun competition to span an entire year which essentially became a giant scavenger hunt.  Photography Challenge

One of our prompts is "Drag King" where the image has to be a self-portrait where we are transformed into men.  Makeup and styling can be outsourced but the subject AND the photographer has to be ourselves.

Meet my, err, twin brother?

I had never done anything like this before so not only was it a completely unique experience it also made me really stop and take my time with the photography.  I'm used to taking selfies which are decidedly feminine, smoothing harsh facial angles, a flirty eyebrow, etc.

One single frame taken was all it took for me to realize the error of my ways.  I've shot plenty of men and know how to achieve a "macho" and "masculine" image but I had NO idea how to pose that way!

It was pretty dang difficult.  I think I tossed about 3/4 of the images right out of the gate when I imported them to LR.

I've showed these to my sister and a group of close girlfriends and here are the FAQ:

5)  How did you hide your chest?!
I saw a tutorial online about duct taping your boobs to the side to give the illusion of a flat chest.  Rest assured that I wasn't sticking duct tape to ANY part of my skin.  Instead I went bra-less and used my arms crossed to sort of squish them down.

4)  Who did your look?
I did.  I did the full makeup and the styling for the shoot.

3)  How much of this is photoshopped?
Only one thing was photoshopped.  I removed a tattoo that I have on my chest.  It looked too feminine and it also follows the curve of my cleavage so it was giving away the illusion.  The rest is 100% as is (with, of course, a little LR enhancement).

2) What the heck did you do that for?
     See above re: photo competition.

1) How in the ____ did you do that beard?!
YouTube to the rescue!  There were quite a few tutorials from Drag Kings who showed a step by step process for faux beard application.  I'm sure I could have tried to achieve the look with simple makeup but I wanted something textured to add to the illusion.  The exact video I used can be found here.

And just for reference:
