4 on 4 | Corruption Edition

Every month myself and a very talented group of ladies from Clickin Moms get together to create the "4 on 4 Blog Circle" showcasing 4 of our favorite images from the month. Be sure to click the link at the bottom of this post to explore the circle!
----------------------------------

Let me be the voice of reason, people.  "It will never happen to me" is a surefire way to make sure it happens to you.  You sit down at your computer, ready to work with your pictures - maybe you're working on some advertising, designing a photo wall, or (god forbid) getting ready to email a gallery to a client.  And you see this:

A quick cartoon blink and you think to yourself, "What the heck is that?"  So you click on another image:

At this point you might be muttering obscenities under your breath.  Your palms start to sweat.  You can feel your pulse in your throat.  Maybe it's just this session...

Image File Corruption

Oh nay.  It's your entire drive.  Every single file corrupted.  Maybe it's just a couple of months, maybe it's a couple of years.  Maybe there are pictures of your deceased aunt.  Or the birth of your baby.  Your wedding.

It can happen to you.  It happened to me.  That's why to this day I have a copy of every single file in more than one place.  External Hard Drives, Cloud Storage, Time Machine Backups.  These are there for a reason and that was a lesson I only had to learn once.

Yes it's a pain in butt getting that notice on the first of every month:  "BACKUP FILES GENIUS".  The genius part was because up until the hard drive crash I had never backed up anything.  You have to say it with a bit of sarcasm to get the right amount of contempt in the message.  But it works and I do it on the first of every month.  I never want to experience that again.

Much better.

So don't be that person.  Even if you just stick your photos on a flash drive or upload them to Flickr (which now has a boatload of free storage) it's better than losing all of your memories.

  1. Ugh- why do you have to speak so much truth in this post? It's like reading that thing I know I should be doing every month but don't during busy months because "it's not going to happen to me."
Thanks for the reminder (goes to upload to cloud now).

  2. This is sooooo scary! My husband once went to make some updates on my computer before I moved my pictures to the appropriate drive and I lost all the pictures. I was totally sick to my stomach. We were able to retrieve most of them, but I have a couple back ups in place. I still don't feel safe, though!
